The Seattle Area is divided into a series of provincial neighborhoods, each resembling its own little town. Each neighborhood has a main drag along which most commercial and cultural activity gravitates. Ballard centers on 15th Ave NW, the college-centric University District focuses on University Way (The Ave), Capitol Hill's action centers along Broadway, family friendly Queen Anne's action is along Queen Anne Avenue North, and so on. Each self-contained neighborhood has its own identity. It's best to move to a Seattle neighborhood and get to know it on foot, rather than expect to drive from point to point like in other cities.- Compared to most cities, Seattle has a fairly comprehensive bus system in King County Metro Transit that can get you most in-city locations within an hour or less. Even trips to nearby suburbs such as Bellevue, Renton, Kenmore and Shoreline from Downtown don't take fairly long at all. Bus fare one way starts at $1.75, rises during rush hour and increases for long trips out of city limits. SoundTransit and Community Transit provides commuter bus service to the near and extended suburbs, as far north as Everett and as far south as Tacoma. For the most part, there isn't the same need for a car in Seattle that you would have in most cities, where bus service is either limited or doesn't exist at all. Most citizens still do own a car, but many commute by bus and only use their car occasionally.
